What is the Dashiki Collection?

The dashiki was originally worn as a way to protest society’ s disrespect for African Americans. It was a symbol of affirmation, it stands for “black is beautiful,” and signaled a return to African roots, and insistence on full rights in American society. Dashiki is a Swahili name for girls meaning Loose-fitting shirt worn in Africa.


West African Origins
The word “dashiki” comes from the Yoruba word danshiki, used to refer to the loose-fitting pullover which originated in West Africa as a functional work tunic for men, comfortable enough to wear in the heat. It is a colorful garment. The Yoruba loaned the word danshiki from the Hausa term dan ciki, which means “underneath.”
The term danshiki began appearing in print at least as early as 1967. Reporting on the 1967 Newark riots in the Amsterdam News on July 22, 1967, in which George Barner refers to a new African garment called a “danshiki”
